Tools

  • Developer tools that get and calculate values from code (e.g. Browser tools such as in Chrome or Firefox)
  • Eye dropper tools (apps or browser extensions)
  • Tools where you enter values into a field to compute (e.g. web page or app)
  • Some tools will compute nearby colors that comply

Check to see if site has an option to change contrast.

When to get contrast values from code

  • Whenever code values are available use those
  • Consider opacity/transparency though

When to use eye dropper

  • for image of text
  • for text over background image
  • for text over gradient
  • Contrast in certain browsers may be adjusted
  • anti-aliasing may produce untrue colors -- so be sure to grab the correct color
  • eye drop from the source rather than an image as image compress may distort colors.

Other things to consider

  • Contrast may change with zoom or responsive views
